ARTS WEEK - World cup fever!

What a busy week it was. Our country Holland (and at this stage they're looking good to hold up the cup!) provided a huge stimulus. As a class we learnt about the geography of the country, it's history, culture and most importantly its football team! We discovered inventors (the speed camera is their fault!) athletes, explorers and a host of other fascinating information. It was a non stop week, but we learnt loads and had lots of fun doing it.

World cup meant footballs, so we had to have a go at making them. (Anyone got a pump!)
Did you know that you can make a sphere by linking hexagons and pentagons together.

The Dutch originally built windmills to help prevent flooding.

Year 4 created a new Dutch 'map' using the red, white and blue of the Dutch  flag and combined it with images associated with Holland - windmills and tulips!

We looked at the work of Rembrandt and tried to emulate his use of lines to create portraits of the current Dutch football team.

Singing the football chant/song that we                      We each designed a new football for the Holland
composed together.                                                     team.

The Vikings

During our topic work, the class learnt much about the lifestyles of the Vikings and their reasons for traveling to Britain. We made weapons, planned a raid and designed and built our own Viking longhouses. Here are some examples of our work.

GROWING OUR OWN IN Y4

Following our work on healthy lifestyles, the children in year 4 decided to grow their own fruit and veg. Each group decided on a different produce which included strawberries, haricot beans, raspberrys, carrots and potatoes. They prepared the ground, planted seeds and transferred potted plants. Hopefully all being well you'll see the results of our efforts later on.

A Healthy start to the term

In Lynx base, we've kicked started the term with a short topic about healthy living. This included learning about a balanced diet, the importance of exercise and how to grow our own food. The children worked in groups planning and then planting a variety of fruit and vegetables in our vegetable patch. They will keep a diary of progression and hopefully be rewarded with a bountiful crop!
Our topic was rounded off brilliantly, when a number of students came into school for the morning to give the children a healthy eating workshop. They particularly enjoyed experimenting with different fruits to make smoothies!

A Great Day with Year 4 by Mr Willson - Trainee/Parent Governor

A Big Thank you to Mrs Thomas, Mrs Green and all the Children of Year 4!

I would like to say that i had a great morning working with you all on Thursday and i really enjoyed myself. Thank you!

I enjoyed spending time working with you on your literacy, numercy and guided reading. I thought you all came up with some great questions in relation to the Sophy in the story 'Running Shoes',  during your literacy lesson.

I also enjoyed watching your football skills during active time. There are some great potential football stars in the making!

Keep up the good work and i look forward to spending some time with you all again soon.

Antarctic topic week

In the penultimate week of term Lynx base learnt all about Antarctica. We did lots of research, finding out where it is, how to get there and what we would find on arrival. We discovered that the days and nights are quite different from ours and we most definitely wouldn't need out swimming costumes!

We even made icebergs from meringues!

and 3D pictures from shoe boxes that show the Antarctic landscape and wildlife.

Come and have a look at them in our classroom.
